Texas A&M University-Commerce Information: A&M-Commerce STEM K-12 Charter School Public Hearing Texas A&M University-Commerce is proposing to apply to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for authorization to start an open-enrollment University Charter School with a focus in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. The proposed charter school, the A&M-Commerce STEM Academy, would initially serve students in grades K-6 starting Fall 2017 and would expand until it reaches K-12. The academy will eventually offer high school diplomas to graduates. The proposed charter school will follow a hybrid model which involves six or more hours per day of project-based learning in a face-to-face format at school with the remainder of the day delivered online to the students at home. Students will experience a rigorous, in-depth curriculum through engaged learner-centered activities and rich online instruction aimed at developing a thorough conceptual understanding of the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). The A&M-Commerce STEM Academy will be located in Greenville, Texas. A&M-Commerce has assembled a Board of Directors for the proposed charter school including Dr. Tim Letzring, Dr. Arlene Horne, Dr. Chuck Holt, and Dr. Mark Reid. Interested parents and community members are encouraged to attend a public meeting on the proposed charter school.
